Toyin Saraki, the embattled wife of the Senate president has revealed that she is ready to respond to an invitation extended to her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over her alleged involvement in a multi-million naira fraud scheme.
Mrs Saraki who was recently invited by the EFCC to respond to allegations in relation to suspicious in-flow of funds into companies where she has vast interests when her husband held sway as governor of Kwara State, said she will assist the anti-graft agency get to the root of the matter.
Speaking on behalf of the wife to former Kwara state governor, Dr. Bukola Saraki, her private secretary, Mr. Akeem Olagoke, said as a transperant and accountable citizen, she will render any assitance to the anti-graft agency.
She said: “I will be delighted to assist them with any lawful enquiries they may have, as a law abiding, transparent and accountable private citizen.”
The statement said the senate president’s wife had no idea of the intent of the anti-graft agency’s invitation.
“Her Excellency, Mrs Toyin Saraki, Founder of Wellbeing Foundation Africa and wife of the Senate President has been informed by her office that a letter of invitation was delivered to her office, by and from the EFCC,” Mr. Olagoke said.
Mr. Olagoke further stated: “She has directed an immediate and formal response, to the EFCC, that she will be delighted to assist them with any lawful enquiries they may have as a law abiding, transparent and accountable private citizen.”
He added that Mrs Saraki has further confirmed an appointment date to honour the EFCC’s invitation at a mutually agreed convenience.
Meanwhile, indications emerged yesterday that the wife of the Senate President, who is expected to be interrogated by a crack team of the EFCC officials on the 28th of this month, might be detained by the anti-graft agency, pending the conclusion of the interrogation.
A credible source at EFCC headquarters in Abuja who spoke to our correspondent, explained that the leadership of the anti-graft agency recently came up with an arrangement that suspects facing interrogation will be remanded at the commission’s detention facility until charges brought against them are exhaustively processed.
The source cited instances of the recent goings on at the commission. He listed some prominent politicians who recently honoured the invitation of EFCC, but were eventually detained, pending the conclusion of the allegations brought against them.
“I am aware that there is a new rule in the EFCC where suspects are detained until interrogations are concluded. We have seen it in the case of Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa state. The same thing happened to Ikedi Ohakim, Murtala Nyako, Steve Oronsaye and several others. So, I expect the same treatment to be melted out to Mrs Saraki.
“I cannot tell you with certainty if that [will]happen, but I will be surprised if the commission does not detain her. I think the leadership of EFCC came up with this idea to prevent suspects from jumping investigations or truncating ongoing ones,”
